Opening hearings, Committee Chair Hryhorii Nemyria said that “the National strategy in the sphere of human rights is a tool of social significance that can direct the energy of state bodies and NGOs for implementation of European standards on human rights.”
According to Nataliia Sevostianova, the First Deputy Minster of Justice of Ukraine, deadlines for elaboration of the National strategy in the sphere of human rights for 2015-2020 were prolonged by the President of Ukraine at the request of human rights organizations.
Nataliia Sevostianova informed participants of committee hearings about the principles of the Strategy and its key directions.
Human Rights Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Valeriia Lutkovska noted that the Strategy should be approved by the law of Ukraine and suggested increasing Committee’s role by granting it with the right to examine all the draft legislative acts referred for consideration by the Verkhovna Rada.
Representatives of international organizations and human rights sector made several proposals on refining the bill in the course of discussing provisions of the Strategy.
Summing up the hearings, H.Nemyria outlined problematic issues that should be added to the text of the Strategy.
Following the results of hearings, participants recommended approve National strategy in the sphere of human rights.
